Leading Market Committee in Eastern Vidarbha

History - Umred is an ancient and historical city, founded in the 16th century by Gond King Karanshah of Chanda (present-day Chandrapur). This town is situated on the banks of the Aam River and has an old fort built by the Gond king Karan Shah in the village. This fort is built with yellow sandstone and previously had a large rampart. The Umred fort is an important evidence of the rich history of the Gond empire. It was a major trading center. This place later came under the control of the Bhonsle dynasty and in 1850, under the British. There are two large lakes near the village, where the large fishing community cultivates water chestnuts.

Trading Center - This place has a large weaver community, and its silk dhotis and sarees were once very famous. The chili market here was also very famous. Water chestnuts are produced and sold in large quantities in the local lakes. Current Situation - Currently, the city is known for the Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, its numerous resorts, and its Savji cuisine. Tourists from all over India come for tiger tourism in the Karhandla Sanctuary and stay in the resorts here. Also, the Savji cuisine here is extremely famous, and people come from far and wide to enjoy it.

Agricultural Produce Market Committee, Umred, Dist Nagpur was established on July 16, 1974, as per Maharashtra Government Notification No. APM/3067/31912 (Third C-B) dated May 21, 1974, and the committee's actual work commenced on December 12, 1974. The committee's jurisdiction covers the entire Umred taluka (191 villages) and includes 36 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and 47 Gram Panchayats.

Initially, the buying and selling of agricultural produce by the Umred Agricultural Produce Market Committee took place on a plot of land adjacent to Hirvya Talav in Mangalwari Peth. As this space proved insufficient for market transactions, the committee purchased 4.91 hectares of land on the Umred-Bhivapur Road, known as "Naidu Bazar," from the Umred Municipal Council. They then developed all the necessary infrastructure and facilities for the buying and selling of agricultural produce on this site. This land was declared the "Main Market Yard" of the Umred Agricultural Produce Market Committee, and the committee commenced agricultural produce trading operations there in the year 2000.

The Umred Market Committee is performing exceptionally well for the farmers and is implementing numerous schemes for their benefit. They provide financial assistance to the families of farmers and farm laborers who die due to natural causes, snake bites, or drowning in floods. The market committee management operates very efficiently, and the many decisions taken in the interest of the farmers are truly commendable. This market committee has always prioritized the welfare of the farmers and will certainly continue to protect their interests while adapting to future changes.
